What Should an Artist Do to Attract New Collectors?

I keep seeing artists make one glaring mistake that turns collectors away: they’re invisible online.

The Offline Trap

It’s 2025—can you believe I still have to say this? No website, no social media, nothing searchable. Some artists think they’re above it, too cool for the digital game, banking on face-to-face charm instead. Sure, in-person is king if you’ve got cash to burn—endless exhibitions, PR teams, press buzz, and a cushy spot in an affluent art hub. Be my guest if that’s you. But let’s be real: most artists don’t have that luxury, and collectors know it.

Why Online Matters

Collectors aren’t hunting for ghosts. They want to see your work, your story, your hustle—right from their phone. Without an online presence, you’re not just hard to find; you look like you’re not serious. I’m an advisor and an artist—I scout emerging talent for a living. If I can’t Google you, I’m moving on. Collectors feel the same.

How to Fix It (Today)

Bite the bullet:

  • Open a social media account—post your art, your process, something weekly.

  • Get a simple website up. It doesn’t need to be fancy—just show your pieces and how to reach you.

Yes, it’ll hold you accountable. You’ll have to show up, create consistently, and put yourself out there. That’s the point! It’s what I look for in emerging artists, and it’s what collectors crave too—proof you’re in it to win it.

The Payoff

Get online, and you’re not just waiting for a lucky break—you’re making one. Collectors can find you, trust you, and buy from you. Isn’t that worth a few clicks? What’s your next step—Instagram or a website?
